I didnt have a chance to try it yet, but what sounds new about it to me is the whole concept of relying on web apps to work. that's why it runs on laptops and you're supposed to be always connected. It's part of a big step ahead toward the next internet-generation, people with a different behaviour (technologically speaking) who have accepted cloud computing at a mainstream use and also cloud services like most of the webapps we already use now.

But I haven't tried it yet so I only know what has been pubblished and what you guys told me about it. I hope is something more then ubuntu (which is fine btw and I have it on my laptop.)

i tried Chrome OS and it is pretty much like a scaled down version of Ubuntu. Chrome is just based on Linux and there is nothing new about it.

@Acnelady, I think that being based on Linux it's one of main strenght cuz it's a known and tested architecture. It's better this way then if they tried something completely new in a field where they don't have much experience.

About competing with Windows I think they really have a chance. At least for what concerns portable devices, which is the market they chose. But it's also the market of the future. MS is still too tied to desktops. Although they did a step ahead with Windows Live Mesh, an interesting tool to sync all your digital devices.

Chrome OS is just based on Linux and it is not really a "real" proprietary operating system from Google. i wonder if Google would also compete with MS Windows in the future.
